Blogging is not just about writing whatever comes to the mind. There are blogging rules that every blogger should follow; generally speaking, such rules relate to Content and Publicity.

1. Content is … ?

Admittedly cliched, the expression ‘Content is King’ is, nevertheless, worth reiterating. You should be writing for your audience and optimizing for search engines; not the other way around. Of course you want your posts to rank in SERP, but then what? If you have visitors leaving your site irritated with keyword crammed articles, you will have a very high bounce rate and eventually fall out of the search engine radars. Unless you provide value to your readers, your blog is not likely to stand out, ever. This is more important than ever after Google’s Penguin and Panda updates that credit good content above all else.

Your posts need not always be informative to provide value. A well-written article describing your musings on a subject can make for a captivating read. A collection of images describing a situation can be very pleasing indeed. Even jokes or cartoons or quotable quotes published regularly provide value. Vaguely rewritten content on subjects you know little about certainly does not.

2. Giving credit where it is due

The Internet, like the real world, is governed by copyright rules. Some of them are set in stone, and then there are the gray areas. One thing is certain, however: Informed readers will know if you are copying from someone else. And that, needless to mention, will not do wonders for your reputation. You could be doing this unwittingly, but the results will be the same. Whenever you feel like quoting from someone else’s article, do precisely that: put the relevant section within quotes (or use the HTML blockquote attribute) and put a link back to the original source. You can choose to make the link nofollow to preserve your link juice, but do link back.

3. Create rules for your blog

You should moderate comments and clearly state a comment policy regarding abusive or racist remarks, but you should also take care about what you write, and how. It is not ethical to write any way you wish just because you can. Be responsible when making judgement calls – or, better still, consider whether you do not wish to simply state facts for your readers and let them decide. Of course, this will depend upon your subject, but a prominent bias does not help online or anywhere else you may be writing.

4. Respect your readers

It is understandable that you would want to earn from your blog. However, turning your blog into a virtual advertisement display board does not help to either generate revenue or retain visitors. You might want to consult the many online resources to understand how to optimize your ads and adsense blocks without hampering the reading experience.

5. Respect your readers – again

Using bold or italicized fonts indiscriminately, and being generous with capitals and exclamation marks are unprofessional. And so is writing continuously without paragraph breaks. If you want your visitors to read your posts, you must make it convenient for them to scan through the writing. Also, consider using sans serif fonts like Arial or Verdana instead of the traditional Times New Roman. Sans serif fonts are web friendly and make for easier reading on computers and mobile devices.

There is just one thing to be said about publicizing your posts: don’t beg, don’t spam. That’s two things, actually, but very similar to each other. Don’t clutter your Facebook friends’ walls with your links. Don’t send emails asking your contacts to check out your latest posts (but do create an email signature with a link to your blog). Keep social sharing buttons below your posts and create a Facebook Page for your blog. Let people decide whether they want to follow you or subscribe to your posts.

And that brings us back to content once again: post as regularly as possible, and make each post count. While a couple of posts every week is an admirable practice, you should focus primarily on the first rule that we stated regarding providing value. To sum up, then, create thoughtful content, make yourself visible, reach out without being annoying, and you will automatically align yourself with most of the blogging rules that every blogger should follow.
