Use of Tablets in office – Do they increase or decrease the productivity?

There can be no question about the increase in productivity when tablets are used in offices. Most IT decision makers believe that the use of tablets and even Smartphones at the workplace increases productivity manifold. Besides leading to cost savings for the companies, tablets also help save a lot of precious time. The trend that we can see emerging now is that it is not only the large organizations that have taken to tablets in a big way, even smaller businesses have found it beneficial. More small businesses are in the race to equip their teams with tablets to increase efficiency and productivity.

With several thousand apps available today, use of the tablet is increasing in every field. Take for instance the apps used by doctors. An app called Heart Pro allows a doctor to view a heart in 3D and cut and label the various parts. Epocrates is another great boon that is an excellent drug reference source where the latest additions are updated almost instantly. A busy architect’s office will have people who can have access to several apps on their tablets like Dropbox that serves as a backup for important files and projects. Mindnote is another app that helps during brainstorming sessions and Evernote is an efficient way to exchange important notes with colleagues.

A realty company can work more efficiently if all the members in the team were to use tablets. There is an app called Pages that is perfect for word processing and it comes with a template that carries a listing flyer that can be handy. The vector drawing app can do floor plans and drawings in an incredibly short time. There is a small concern that with the increased use of tablets in the office time could get wasted in frivolous acts of procrastination like surfing the web which could get people so engrossed that time would just fly past unnoticed. The risk of having the team indulging in playing games either singly or even in groups cannot be ruled out. The great risk of having some indulge in browsing pornographic content is also present all the time. However, with judicious management and proper training and indoctrination such issues can be overcome. Hence, we can safely assume that the use of tablets in the office is definitely contributing to increased productivity.
